Boyne under 14's travelled to the French town of Provins, just outside Paris, for a rugby tournament over the May bank holiday weekend. To say the coaches, parents and players were blown away by the size, scope and organization of the tournament would be an understatement. Starting from breakfast on Saturday morning, through the banquet Saturday evening and on to dinner Sunday night volunteers provided meals for over 600 participants. The tournament started with a colourful well supported parade through the town, with plenty of singing and applause coming from all the participants.
Boyne U-14's traveled to Navan to take on North Kildare in the Leinster U-14's cup semi-final. It was a warm sunny afternoon when both teams lined out. Boyne made some changes to the line-up to try add some solidity to their defense in the back line and while this was a plus on the defense it lessened our ability to get quick ball out wide. The game played out in true cup fashion with both teams giving their all, and the scoring chances were rare. Boyne went in at half time 6 - 0 up from two penalties by scrum-half John Connolly.
Boyne 14's hosted English tourists Melton Mowbray for an Easter Sunday game in Shamrock Lodge. It was a well balanced game with both sides showing a great willingness to run with the ball. Boyne mixed up their squad, welcoming Peter Prendergast back from boarding school and moving no 8 Neil Reilly to inside center amongst other changes. It was a useful set of alterations and give the coaching team plenty of thought before next weekends Leinster Cup Semi-final against North Kildare.
Boyne hosted Navan in this quarter final of the u-14 Schools-Youth competition in Shamrock Lodge expecting to have a good tussle with their neighbours. Navan however were stronger on the day, their back row being first to the breakdown and turning over a large amount of ball. With the game scoreless Boyne full-back Ciaran McArdle took a knock to the face which finished his involvement in the game. The ensuing reshuffle saw Navan go over in the corner when the cover wasn't there.
A very flattering scoreline does no justice to a game where Skerries were in contention until the last 10 minutes. Boyne struggled to get there rucking game functioning and the malaise spread from there out through the backs both sides struggled for dominance. A break from Caoilte Hickey saw him score the first try, followed by a try from Mark Rogers which saw the teams turn around 12 - 0 to Boyne at half time. Boyne didn't deal with a long drop off and this resulted in a try under the posts for Skerries saw them draw back to 12 - 7.
Boyne under 14's welcomed Seapoint to Shamrock Lodge in the second round of the schools-youth cup. A sunny day with a dry pitch with only a fair breeze blowing across the pitch to bother the players. Boyne started well with outside center Caoilte Hickey cutting back in on a mazy run to touch down for the first try. Adam Delaney collected the ensuing drop off and drove the Seapoint forwards back to their own 22.
Boyne 14's hosted Virginia's 15's at Shamrock Lodge on a bright sunny Sunday morning in Shamrock Lodge. Virgina are in the Ulster cup semi-finals and Boyne have an upcoming cup matches so both were in need of a tough challenge match. Boyne resisted some Virginia pressure before showing some super hands during attack which culminated in center Caoilte Hickey putting through a grubber kick for winger Conor Redmond to touch down. Virgina struck back and although Boyne defended well, a quick tap penalty by Virginia, 5 meters from the Boyne line wasn't stopped.
Boyne under 14's played DLSP in the 1st round of the Schools-Youth cup in Shamrock Lodge hoping to put into effect the skills we had been working on in training. Unfortunately for them DLSP were very slow to start off and let Boyne get a commanding lead by half time. The second half saw DLSP, led from the front by their out-half they put much more pressure on the Boyne side and were rewarded with two fine tries. Boyne's scorers were spread across the whole team. Boyne will now host Seapoint in the next round.
Boyne under 14's travelled to North Kildare for this Leinster League Under-14's quarter final with high expectations. The game started out with North Kildare on the offensive, putting the Boyne forwards on the back foot. The constant pressure resulted in a converted try to go 7 - 0 up. Further pressure failed to result in a score and as the half progressed Boyne started to come to terms with the opposition and for the last few minutes dominated the exchanges.
