Boyne Under-19's efforts to add the Culliton cup to the towns cup won by the seniors came up just short in this entertaining decider at Donnybrook on the May bank holiday Monday.
Opponents Enniscorthy were the more fancied side, but Boyne - coached by first-team players Cillian Duffy & Niall Kerbey - shaded the early exchanges on a pitch that resembled a sandy beach in parts. After eight minutes Boyne won good ball from a ruck , and when full-back Ciaron Clinton entered the line he off-loaded in the tackle to the supporting Robert Tallon to run in unopposed for an excellent try.
Boyne Under 19's advanced to the semi-final of the Leinster Culliton Cup following a well earned quarter final victory over Kildare club Barnhall at Leixlip on Saturday. Boyne outscored their opponents by 2 tries, 2 penalties and a conversion to a converted try for the home team.
The dream ended at Naas on Sunday last for the Boyne under 19's when they went down to a very strong New Ross team in this semi-final of the Leinster Under 19's league. The New Ross side entered this game as strong favourites and boast a very strong side with several representative players in their team. It was evident from the outset that the Boyne boys would have a job on their hands to contend with a very physical New Ross set of forwards.
The 2009/2010 Leinster Youth Cup draws were made on Tuesday 26th January and are after pitting Boyne against local neigbours Dundalk, Navan & Skerries in the Under 19's, Under 15's and Under 14's respectively. The Under 17's travel away to Birr, with a 2nd round tie against Navan awaiting the winner and the Under 13's must travel to North Kildare. The complete draws for each team are attached.
The Under 19's and Under 17's start their campaign on February 13th, with the Under 15's and Under 13's starting the following week, February 20th. Due to the small number of clubs playing at Under 14's that competition does not start until March 20th.
The success that Boyne is having this year is not confined to their senior sides. Whilst the senior sides in the club wrapped up their pre christmas campaigns the week before, the under 19's had to travel to Wicklow last Saturday to take on the home side in the quarter final of the Culleton Cup. The original fixture fell victim to the recent bad weather and it was a home game for Boyne. However, the venue was reversed when Wicklow made the futile journey to Drogheda and the official deemed the pitch unplayable.
The Boyne Under 19's were rewarded for their second place finish in the Northern Section of the Leinster League with a home ¼ final against the third place finisher in the Southern Section, Wicklow. The game is scheduled for Saturday 5th December and the players will be looking for a large turn out of supporters on the day.
Boyne U19s made the journey to Barnhall on Saturday last for a difficult assignment in their Leinster League programme.
Conditions were very wet underfoot with a blustery cold wind blowing across the pitch.
Boyne started tamely and allowed the host team to seize the early initiative.
The visitors were fortunate not to concede early points when Barnhall missed an easy penalty from just outside the 22 metre line
Boyne U19s hosted Northern visitors Banbridge for a friendly fixture on Saturday last in Shamrock Lodge
Conditions were very excellent with a mild wind blowing from behind the goal.
Boyne played against the sun & wind in the 1st half, and it was the visitors who seized the early initiative. Banbridge using their big powerful pack of forwards to great effect.
Boyne U19s made the long journey to Longford on Saturday last for the third match of their Leinster League programme.
Conditions were very excellent with only a slight breeze blowing towards the club house goal.
Boyne played with the aid of the breeze in the 1st half but the host team showed their intent from the kick off. Longford used their big powerful pack of forwards to dominate the early exchanges. However, it was quite evident that Boyne had the upper hand when they used their backs to spread the ball wide away from the contact area.
