With high winds and regular heavy showers it was a miserable day for rugby. A home fixture meant the ladies were out to impress their supporters witch in spite the weather a respectful number showed up. All went to the Boyne ladies favour at the toss and they played with the wind for the first half. With a good kick off by Marian Holland the Boyne defence was quick to retrieve the ball and looked to be set for an early try. However this was short lived and the opposition took control with a try early in the half taking advantage of an over lap in the backs. It was not converted as the wind blew the ball off the tee as the player approached. This seemed to break the home team’s spirits as they spent most of the first half in their own 22. Not playing to the form we are now getting used to seeing them in it was a disappointing first half to watch and play. Ending Boyne 0 City of Derry 5.
After words of wisdom from Coach Nial Sweeney at half time. The Boyne Ladies seemed to pull them self together. The second half we saw the lineouts improve despite the wind picking up. The backs played to the conditions keeping the passes close and safe. And from this Marian Holland getting by several of the opposition slid under the posts for an impressive try. By making the conversion she put Boyne in the lead. A lot of the second half was kept in the forward and there was several impressive drives making good ground. This hard work played off as a maul was driven over the line and placed down for the second and final try of the game by Sandra Mc Aleer.
It was by far a tough match with no one side dominating and leaving Boyne with a lot of food for thought before the sides meet again in January.
