Boyne U12s made the long trip down to the bottom of the M50 to Ballycorus Rd, Kiltiernan for their most recent Metro Fixture vs Old Wesley RFC, for an 11am kick-off.
Yet again we travelled with a large squad of 34 players, so we made up two equal squads with 17 players in each squad. Unfortunately both Old Wesley & Suttonians had much smaller numbers, 21 & 17 respectively, so it was difficult to get everyone as much game time as we would have liked. However we did try to roll the lads in and out of the matches as often as possible. Indeed some of our lads agreed to play for Suttonians RFC in order that everyone got more game time. Big thank you to those lads that volunteered.
Old Wesley RFC as hosts decided on the format of the matches. Each of our sides, Lions & Tigers, were scheduled to play four 10 minute matches.
The Old Wesley lads proved to be a big physical bunch of lads, playing some very direct rugby, running hard at the Boyne defence. While the Suttonians lads were boosted by the addition of some very good Boyne players into their teams. All eight matches were well contested affairs with never more than a few scores between the sides. We looked strong in attack scoring some great tries and sometimes a little vulnerable in the tackle/defence. We seem to be able to win our own ruck ball easily enough but still haven’t fully grasped the idea of attacking the opposition ruck ball to create turnovers.
There were some very good individual performances but it is the team play from the lads, that is most pleasing to see. We will continue to work on the basic skills of the game, catching, passing, tackling & rucking, once we get these skills right at a young age we will hopefully have a really good team for the competitive youth’s and adult rugby that lies ahead.
On a more sombre note, one of squad members has played his final game with us; Cathal Deegan is emigrating to Canada this week. We will all miss him and hope he has good rugby memories to bring to Canada with him. Sean Rochford on behalf of the coaches and Cathal’s teammates presented him with a farewell card and Boyne RFC pennant.
Big Thanks to all of the Mums and Dads who made the long trip to Kiltiernan early on a Sunday morning. All of the coaches really appreciate your commitment to training and match days.
We will be training on Wednesday in the O’Raghallaigh’s @ 8pm, and there will be training and a visit from Santa on Saturday morning in Shamrock Lodge starting at 11.30am.
Our TRIP TO THE AVIVA for Leinster v Northampton seemed to be a great success, with all of the lads enjoying the coach trip and the match itself, although maybe not the performance or result. Thanks to the lads for their good behaviour, it is very easy to be proud of them on trips like that and also thanks to the parents who travelled and helped out with walking the kids to and from the stadium.
Next fixture is against Dundalk RFC on Sunday 12th of January in Shamrock Lodge.
