Leinster Branch Anderson Cup Navan 3pts Boyne 15pts

Leinster Junior 3 Anderson Cup – Navan 3pts Boyne 15pts
Boyne J 3’s certainly caused an upset on Friday last when Emmet Grogan’s team had a significant cup win over North East neighbours Navan at Balreask Old. Played under floodlights, Boyne welcomed back some of their former players for this game with Garret O’Dowd, making his return from Dubai a memorable one,  when he scored Boyne’s first try early in the first half when he ‘robbed’ the ball from his opposite scrum half to dive over for a try. Darren McGill’s attempt at the conversion was just wide of the posts. Nevertheless, Boyne were on the scoreboard following 10 minutes play and they increased this when McGill found his accuracy and range to slot a penalty midway through the first half. The Boyne forwards were working well and winning good ball for their backs who were willing to attack at every opportunity. The home side held their line well until half time and kept the visitors at bay until the half time whistle.
Boyne introduced some of their younger players for this game, with Rory Hennessy, Dave O’Neill, Ryan Healy and Sean Callaghan all faring well during this game. A superb half time talk by Boyne veteran, Fergus Walsh, certainly worked wonders for the younger players and another former Boyne player, Ciaran Smith, also made a welcome return to the club and came on at half time to further strengthen the side with his presence.
The mixture of experience and youth blended well and Boyne increased their lead 10 minutes into the second half when Rory Hennessy crashed over for his side’s 2nd try which saw a brilliant conversion from Darren McGill from way out on the left. At this stage Boyne had a commanding lead and were playing controlled rugby with forwards and backs holding possession and not allowing the opposition and attacking opportunities. Navan did pull 3pts back with a penalty and missed another subsequent penalty chance to close down the Boyne lead.
Boyne had no intention of relinquishing their lead however and ran out winners on the score 15pts to 3pts.
Boyne now face another North East team, North Meath, in the next round which will be played this weekend at Shamrock Lodge.
