Boyne v Kilkenny An eager to win Boyne under 13’s stepped on to the pitch at Shamrock Lodge this Saturday to face Kilkenny RFC. From the kick off Kilkenny let Boyne know they meant business and pushed forward from the outset. A momentary lapse of concentration in the Boyne back line allowed Kilkenny put the first try on the score board. It took another 10 minutes before an equalising try by Zak Swanson after a great run up the wing brought Boyne level. Both teams were well matched and Kilkenny fought hard to get back across Boyne’s try line. Excellent defence from Benji Mc Garth, Stephan Bors and Lee Grifferty kept Kilkenny’s attack under control. Several super sprinting breaks from James Keogh and Alex Hanraty had the side-line spectators cheering them on. Kilkenny’s defence was very strong but Boyne weren’t going to give up. With 5 points each at half time the teams went to their coaches for inspiration. Back on the pitch for the second half Boyne were fighting hard to put an early score on the board. Showing great form, fancy footwork and dummy passes form David Maxwell, Sean Horan, Alan Foley, Eoin Cummins and Caolan Nulty got the ball out to Alex Hanraty on the wing who ran in a well-deserved try under the posts. Euan Canniffe converted to put Boyne 7 ahead. In the lead for the first time bad luck struck for Boyne with Stephan Bors coming off with a suspected muscle injury. Frank Madden and Oisin Lynch stepped up to the mark to keep the forwards in check with Boyne No8 gone off the pitch. Kilkenny were not out of the game and put up a very strong barrage of attacks but thanks to great rucking by Danny Little and Ivan Murray Boyne won back plenty of ball. Under pressure Kilkenny gave away a penalty which was easily converted by the in-form Euan Canniffe. Boyne now on a roll pushed forward looking for another score. With huge effort and drive Boyne were rewarded with Kyle Nelson scoring the last try of the match. With a comfortable lead of 15 points with 5 minutes to go Boyne looked comfortable and confident of the win. Great result for Boyne. This team has definitely found its form today. Well done to all the players who put in their best efforts on the pitch. The season ain’t over yet and we want to see more of this.
