J1 XV 7 - 18 Arklow (Provincial Towns Cup)

Arklow 1sts were the visitors to Shamrock Lodge on Sunday last for the Leinster PTC to play Boyne J1 side. This was an entertaining game and played in true PTC spirit with the scoreline flattering the visitors following a valliant Boyne effort throughout this game.
A vital spell midway in the first half with Boyne holding off sustained Arklow pressure, they had two sin binning’s and a sending off which severely dented their chances. At one stage they had 12 players holding the line. The yellow cards came for a team offence following a warning and a deliberate knock on when the player went for the intercept. The sending off came following a retaliation by a Boyne player.
Despite this disadvantage, Boyne sustained the Arklow offensive and held them to a 10pt scoreline. Arklow took advantage of the weakened Boyne scrum and were awarded a penalty try. They converted this and added a penalty to bring them to 10pts. When Boyne were restored to 14 players just before half time, they turned the tables and began to attack the Arklow rear-guard with some fine running which caused problems for the visitors. Good line kicking by scrum half, Shane Campbell, kept his side going forward. The hard work of forwards, Jerry Onianwa, Keith Keogh, Jack Woods and Padraig Mongey kept their side deep in the Arklow half coming up to half time.
This trend continued into the second half with Boyne taking the game to the opposition at every opportunity with great foraging and gusto to run the ball at every opportunity. The ploy to keep the ball alive was also working well and some excellent off loading meant that the Arklow forwards were struggling to contain the opposition.
Boyne’s efforts were rewarded with a fine try when a series of transfers ended with Robbie Brodigan going over out wide. Ruairí Hickey converted to really give his side a chance to cause an upset. Arklow increased their lead with a penalty to bring them to 13pts. Despite the best efforts of Boyne, who missed two very kickable penalties, they just couldn’t break down a stubborn and resilient Arklow defence.
Most of the game was played in Arklow territory in the second half but almost on full time they did manage an attack which brought them to within five metre’s of the Boyne line. They finished their evenings work with a try from the resultant scrum to run out winners on the flattering scoreline of 7pts to 18pts.
This was a huge effort by the Boyne 2nd string and they gave the visitors a serious match which provided them with a tough test in their opening tie of the PTC.
