Start-of-Season Update 2014-2015
Training started back in early September combining both tag and contact rugby for the girls.
26th September – 1st contact blitz - Barnhall
Organised by Leinster’s Jennie Bagnall and Noeleen Spain, for girls only starting contact, we could play 2 age groups U17 and U15. For the U17 we were joined up by Skerries girls, Katie, Holly, Meabh and Jessica. Both teams played 2 games each, won one and lost one. Games were 10 players a side with uncontested 3-girl scrums and line-outs. Despite having very little positional training, the girls on both teams played really well, were buzzing after the match and full of talk of the next blitz to come.
4th October – Bring-a-friend to rugby day
The 4th October was Bring-a-friend to rugby day which brought out about 10 friends/new players. Some of the new girls included Caoimhe, Sarah, Keve, Heather, Erin Kate and Amia. There was a special guest appearance from Grace Davitt, Ireland international player who also played with Boyne. Grace put the girls through their paces with some ball handling and tackling drills. The day finished off with a round robin tag blitz.
4th November – Tag blitz - Barnhall
Aoife Donovan from Barnhall organised a tag blitz for girls ranging from 7 to 16 for a series of tag matches. Suttonians had 2 teams at U16 and we had one, so the Boyne girls played both teams from Sutton and themselves. These were fast flowing games with a good handling and great running lines from Suttonians. Well done to all the girls especially Eiblin and Leah for their great effort during these games.
26th November – Contact/tag with Ardee
This was a local Derby with the Ardee girls travelling to Drogheda. The U17 girls had a contact match, with Boyne girls being joined by the Skerries stalwarts, Holly, Jessica and Katie. It was a fast moving game in which Ardee dominated in the break-down with the Ardee girls rucking and counter-rucking as if they had being doing it for years. Well done to the Ardee girls for a great match and to the Boyne and Skerries girls for stepping up to the mark. The U14 girls played a tag match and it was a close run affair.
3rd December – Tag blitz in Dundalk
This again was a local derby with Ardee, Dundalk and Boyne entertaining supporters with fast moving games. We had a great turn out in Dundalk. Our U16s team included Tara, Soha, Susie, Roisin, Hannah, Louise and Niamh. Our U14 team included Shannon, Annastasia, Caoimhe, Leah, Zoe, Sydney, Gwen and Jessica.
24th January – Arklow contact blitz
A real Spring day say the Girls U15 and U18 contact head to ARklow for a round robin with teams from Enniscorthy, Arklow, Barnhall and St. Mary’s/Tempelogue, Dublin. A fantastic day’s rugby ensued with th U15s winning 2 and losing 1 match. The U18s joined forces with Ardee and won 1, losing 2 matches. With perfect conditions, some excellent handling, tackling and rucking saw us score some super tries by both our teams. These matches are ideal for developing the skills learned on the training ground and the progression of the squad is clear to see. Girls Squad: Shannon Sweeney; Louise McCleery; Ellen Campbell; Laura McDonald; Zoe Ettie; Hannah Ettie; Sydney Sterio; Caoimhe Doherty; Mia Walsh; Niamh Tester; Jessica Woodlock and Roisin Joyce. Thanks also to Anna from Enniscorthy who joined our U15 team.
7th February – Show me the tackle – Colin O’Hare – Dundalk
Colin O’Hare led a tackle training session for coaches and girls in Dundalk. There was a big focus on footwork and body posture with Colin bringing the girls into games and then breaking down the tackle in small groups to help the girls to make better tackles. In attendance from Boyne were Caoimhe Doherty, Sally Kirk, Jessica Woodlock, Laura McDonald, Rebecca Murray and Hannah and Zoe Ettie.
