Irish Times: Boyne boy taking fluid and open game in his stride

INTERVIEW NIALL RONAN: Gerry Thornley talks to the number seven who has thrived at this rarefied level, with signs that not only is he enjoying it, but it suits him.
WHEN NIALL Ronan began this season the emphasis for openside flankers was on slowing down opposition ball or forcing turnovers. They were the destroyers and they were in their element. The likes of Heinrich Brüssow, David Pocock and Richie McCaw were ruling the roost.

Niall Ronan excels down under

Ex Boyne player Niall Ronan played a great game against the NZ Maori today. The new rule interpretation is leading to a faster more open game and this suited Niall who carried well. Niall Ronan Ireland came back from 18 - 0 down to go in at 18 all at the break, after getting used to the higher pace required. Displaying a bit more fearlessness on the pitch than he did in the skies, Niall worked the breakdown at the edge and was unlucky to be penalised 3 times by referree Lawrence Bryce, but with more exposure to the new breakdown rules the Irish players will be less likely to infringe. The team were very unlucky to lose out 31 - 28, but many of those will be part of the Irish squad for the 2011 World Cup.

Ex-Boyne youth's player to Connacht

Congrationlations to ex-Boyne youths player Shane Monahan who is moving from the Leinster Academy to play with Connacht next season. Shane follows a strong list of ex-Boyne players who have played for the Irish provinces, including Shane Horgan with Leinster, Niall Ronan with Munster and Mark McHugh who played with Connacht before moving to France.

Condolences

The club would like to extend its sincere condolences to Anna Carlos, wife of Paul Carlos, President of Boyne RFC, and the Maher Family, on the recent sad and sudden loss of their brother John Maher.

Boyne RFC Annual General Meeting

Following another fabulous season, Boyne Rugby Club members will assemble at Shamrock Lodge on Thursday next, the 27th of May at 8pm to review their activities over the last year as well as looking forward to the coming season when they will be setting out their plans to bring senior rugby to the town of Drogheda for the first time. This aspiration has now become a very real prospect, with the winners of the Leinster League Div 1a gaining direct entry into the AIL. With the AIL restructured, as and from 2011, there will be no Provincial winners round robin process to go through next year.

Boyne Player Bevan Duffy wins Leinster Club Player Of The Year.

Bevan Duffy picked up the Paul Sheeran Club Player of the Year after being an integral part of Boyne's Newstalk Provincial Towns Cup winning team; a notable triumph for the Drogheda club who won the coveted pot for the second year in a row. Bevan Duffy The accomplished centre was also the stand-out performer in the Leinster League as his club finished runners up to Seapoint while he made a vital contribution to Leinster winning the Junior Interprovincial for the third year in succession. The progressive Drogheda club have been in the Leinster honours enclosure over recent years and apart altogether from their exploits on the field of play, they also picked up The Referees Club Of The Year in 2007 along with Leinster PRO Of The Year last year ( Seamie Briscoe) and this year Bevan Duffy taking the coveted best player award for club rugby in Leinster.
Seamie Briscoe, who was at the awards dinner, commented that it was a great honour indeed, to once again have the club receive such an award at the highest level. It was well deserved he said, and it went to one of the most unassuming lads in the club. Bevan is a super player and is a member of a great squad of players who have brought tremendous honour to the club.

Cillian Duffy lines out for Ireland Police Team

I have just received news from Glasgow where another Duffy, this time Cillian, is making another piece of history when he lined out with the police force, North and South, to play against the Scotish Constabulary. He was the only junior player in the All Ireland team who beat their Scots counterparts on the score 65 pts to 15 pts. The Boyne player is the first member of the club to play at such a level and creates another piece of history for the club.
